Tibial Shaft Fracture Rehabilitation

Overview:

Tibial shaft fractures require careful attention to weight-bearing progression. Strengthening the lower leg muscles and restoring ankle mobility are key components of rehab.

Phase I:

Immediate Post-Op (Weeks 0-2) Goals: Decrease swelling, maintain foot and ankle range-of-motion. Recommended Exercises: Ankle alphabets, toe curls, and elevated rest to reduce swelling.

Phase II:

Early Rehabilitation (Weeks 2-8) Goals: Controlled progression to partial or full weight-bearing (as ordered), improve knee and ankle flexibility. Recommended Exercises: Seated calf raises, knee-to-wall ankle mobilization, gentle balance work (with support).

Phase III:

Advanced Rehabilitation (Weeks 8-16+) Goals: Build lower leg strength, improve gait, and regain full mobility. Recommended Exercises: Standing calf raises, single-leg balance drills, light jogging or elliptical (as tolerated).
