Pilon (Distal Tibia) Fracture Rehabilitation

Overview:

Pilon fractures involve the distal tibia near the ankle and can significantly impact joint alignment. Rehabilitation focuses on protecting the joint surface while restoring range-of-motion and strength around the ankle.

Phase I:

Immediate Post-Op (Weeks 0-4) Goals: Minimize swelling, protect the ankle joint, gentle ROM as allowed by surgeon. Recommended Exercises: Ankle pumps (if no hardware stress), toe curling, non-weight-bearing activities like stationary arm cycling to maintain fitness.

Phase II:

Early Rehabilitation (Weeks 4-12) Goals: Begin gradual weight-bearing with assistive devices, improve ankle mobility. Recommended Exercises: Ankle dorsiflexion/plantarflexion stretches, standing calf stretches, partial weight-bearing with crutches or walker.

Phase III:

Advanced Rehabilitation (Weeks 12-24+) Goals: Restore full range-of-motion, strengthen ankle stabilizers, improve proprioception. Recommended Exercises: Single-leg balance, step-up/down drills, progressive return to low-impact sports.
