Hip Fracture Rehabilitation

Overview:

Hip fracture rehabilitation focuses on restoring mobility and stability while minimizing pain. Early weight-bearing (if permitted by your surgeon) and gentle exercises are essential to prevent complications like muscle atrophy and joint stiffness.

Phase I:

Immediate Post-Op (Weeks 0-2) Goals: Pain management, gentle range-of-motion, and prevention of blood clots. Recommended Exercises: Ankle pumps, heel slides, and gentle glute squeezes in bed.

Phase II:

Early Rehabilitation (Weeks 2-6) Goals: Gradual increase in weight-bearing (per surgeon’s orders) and improved joint mobility. Recommended Exercises: Seated leg lifts, standing weight shifts, and supported squats with a walker.

Phase III:

Advanced Rehabilitation (Weeks 6-12+) Goals: Regain near-normal gait pattern, build hip and core strength, and improve balance. Recommended Exercises: Single-leg stands (if stable), mini-lunges, and hip abductor strengthening with resistance bands.
