Fractures Around the Knee Joint

Overview:

Fractures affecting the knee joint (distal femur, proximal tibia, or patella) often require careful management to restore joint mobility and prevent stiffness.

Phase I:

Immediate Post-Op (Weeks 0-2) Goals: Protect joint, control inflammation, initiate gentle range-of-motion if allowed. Recommended Exercises: Quadriceps sets, passive knee flexion/extension with a CPM (Continuous Passive Motion) machine if prescribed.

Phase II:

Early Rehabilitation (Weeks 2-6) Goals: Increase knee flexion and extension, begin partial weight-bearing if indicated. Recommended Exercises: Wall slides assisted leg lifts, and gentle static lunges with support.

Phase III:

Build strength in the quadriceps and hamstrings, improve balance, resume light activities. Recommended Exercises: Step-down exercises, mini-squats, stationary cycling with light resistance.
