Ankle Fracture Rehabilitation

Overview:

Ankle fractures vary widely. Some may be treated conservatively, while others require surgical fixation. Rehabilitation emphasizes restoring proper gait and mobility of the ankle joint.

Phase I:

Immediate Post-Op (Weeks 0-2) Goals: Control swelling, maintain overall foot and ankle circulation. Recommended Exercises: Toe wiggling, gentle ankle pumps (if permitted), and rest with limb elevated.

Phase II:

Early Rehabilitation (Weeks 2-6) Goals: Begin partial weight-bearing, gentle range-of-motion exercises. Recommended Exercises: Alphabet ankle movements, seated heel-toe raises, short walks with assistive devices.

Phase III:

Advanced Rehabilitation (Weeks 6-12+) Goals: Regain normal gait pattern, increase ankle strength and balance, progress to full weight-bearing. Recommended Exercises: Standing heel raises, balance board exercises, gradual return to daily activities.
